HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004)

DevOps

The HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004) practice examination is designed to assess candidates' foundational knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and their ability to use Terraform Community Edition and HCP Terraform to provision, manage, and maintain infrastructure in production-representative scenarios.

The examination covers important areas such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform, Terraform Fundamentals, Core Terraform Workflow, Terraform Configuration, Terraform Modules, Terraform State Management, Maintain Infrastructure with Terraform, and HCP Terraform.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate accurate recall of Terraform CLI commands and configuration language syntax, sound judgement in applying the correct workflow step or configuration construct to a described scenario, and a working understanding of state management, drift, modules, and HCP Terraform's collaboration and governance features, aligned to Terraform 1.12.

This is an original practice examination developed for learning, revision, preparation, and self-assessment purposes. It is not an official HashiCorp examination paper unless explicitly authorised by the exam owner, and it does not reproduce official HashiCorp exam questions.

Note on currency: Terraform Associate 003 was retired on January 8, 2026 and is no longer available to schedule. Version 004 (aligned to Terraform 1.12) opened for scheduling December 9, 2025 and has been the only active version of this exam since January 8, 2026 — this syllabus is built entirely from the current 004 objectives. Version 004 adds four notable focus areas versus 003: depends_on and lifecycle (create_before_destroy), custom configuration conditions, ephemeral values and write-only arguments, and organizing work with HCP Terraform workspaces and projects.

Note on domain weighting: Unlike CompTIA, AWS, or LPI, HashiCorp does not publish official percentage weights per domain for this exam — only an ordered list of 8 objective groups and their sub-objectives. The weighting below is derived proportionally from the number of official sub-objectives in each group (37 total across the 8 groups), which several independent prep sources also describe as "not weighted equally," with configuration and workflow carrying the heaviest emphasis. Treat these percentages as a well-reasoned estimate for study prioritization, not an official HashiCorp figure.
